Fuel Crisis Sparks Surge in Electric Vehicle Demand as Australians Seek Relief from Rising Petrol Prices

Demand for electric vehicles is rising across Australia as motorists respond to soaring fuel prices driven by global supply disruptions. With diesel and petrol prices frequently exceeding $3.00 a litre in major cities, the financial case for switching to electric has reached what experts call a “tipping point.”

According to the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), sales from major brands including Tesla and Polestar increased by 39.2 per cent during the first three months of 2026 compared with the same period last year.

A total of 7,725 vehicles were delivered by these two brands in Q1 alone.

Sales and Test Drives Increase

Tesla Australia remains the market leader, selling more than 3,400 vehicles in March 2026, a 23 per cent jump from March 2025. Tesla country director Thom Drew noted that local stock is being cleared out as fast as it arrives. “The fuel crisis is pushing Australians to look for more certainty, both on energy and the cost of living, and EVs are delivering exactly that,” he said.

While Polestar saw a slight 12 per cent dip in total March deliveries due to model changeovers, Polestar Australia managing director Scott Maynard reported that test drive bookings tripled in the final two weeks of the month.

There is a clear sense of urgency from customers, which is driving strong order volumes, Maynard said.

Shift in Consumer Behaviour

Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Julie Delvecchio says the current spike isn’t just a trend, but an acceleration of a permanent shift. Industry data shows that electric vehicles accounted for 11.8 per cent of all new car sales in February 2026, up from just 5.9 per cent a year earlier.

“The fuel crisis hasn’t created interest in EVs—it has accelerated a transition that was already happening,” Delvecchio said. She noted that households switching to an EV could save up to $3,000 per year in running costs, providing a significant buffer against inflation.
