Toyota Recalls Over 13,000 HiLux Utes Over Potential Power Steering Failure

Toyota has recalled 13,390 HiLux utes across Australia after identifying a critical wiring fault that can lead to a sudden loss of power steering assistance.

The recall, confirmed by the Department of Transport on April 8, 2026, specifically targets vehicles manufactured between August 28, 2025, and February 24, 2026.

The issue is linked to the installation of Toyota Genuine Accessory bull bars or nudge bars equipped with a light bar.

Electrical Fault Causes Sudden Steering Failure

The defect is mechanical in nature: during the installation of the bull bar or nudge bar, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) wire harness ground connection may have been re-installed incorrectly.

The Hazard: Poor electrical contact can compromise the earth connection to the EPS module, causing it to become inoperative without warning.

The Result: The steering will become instantly and significantly heavier, particularly at low speeds.

The Warning: Toyota has confirmed there are no warning lights or prior symptoms before the failure occurs.

The Department of Infrastructure’s official recall notice warns that this sudden loss of assistance increases the risk of serious accidents, which could result in “injury or death” to occupants and other road users.

Owners Urged to Arrange Inspection

Toyota Australia is contacting affected owners via mail. The remedy involves an inspection by a Toyota dealer to correct the EPS earth terminal orientation.

Cost: The inspection and repair are free of charge.

Time: The process typically takes about 30 minutes.

Check Your VIN: Owners can verify if their vehicle is affected by quoting their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline at 1800 987 366.

The recall comes as VFACTS figures for March 2026 confirmed the HiLux as Australia’s second-best-selling vehicle, with 4,167 units delivered last month—trailing only the Ford Ranger (4,452 units).
