Rohan Dennis Breaks Silence on Death of Wife Melissa Hoskins, Slams Media “Narrative”

Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has spoken publicly for the first time about the 2023 death of his wife, fellow Olympian Melissa Hoskins, insisting the tragedy was a “terrible accident” and accusing the media of portraying him as an abusive husband.

In a lengthy statement shared on Instagram on Monday night, April 6, 2026, Dennis broke a two-year silence to address the incident and the intense public scrutiny that has followed.

“Yes, it was an accident. I loved Melissa and the last thing I ever wanted was to hurt her,” he wrote. “The narrative which the media ran with was clear they wanted me to look like the husband who abused his wife.”

Legal Background and Sentencing

The statement follows the conclusion of his legal case in May 2025. In the South Australian District Court, Dennis pleaded guilty to an aggravated charge of creating a likelihood of harm.

The Incident: The court heard the couple were arguing over home renovations on December 30, 2023, when Dennis attempted to drive away in their Volkswagen Amarok. Hoskins jumped onto the bonnet and then grabbed the driver’s side door as he continued to drive; she eventually fell and was dragged under the vehicle.

The Verdict: Judge Ian Press found that while Dennis “disregarded his wife’s safety,” he was not criminally responsible for her death.

The Sentence: Dennis was handed a 17-month jail sentence, which was wholly suspended for two years. He remains on a good behavior bond and is currently serving a five-year driving disqualification.

Backlash Over “Weapon” Post

The timing of Dennis’s statement appears linked to a controversy in March 2026, when he returned to social media to post a photo of a Porsche with the caption “what an absolute weapon.”

The choice of words drew sharp condemnation from victim advocates, including South Australia’s Victims’ Rights Commissioner, Sarah Quick, who described the language as “deeply offensive” and “demonstrating a lack of empathy” given that a vehicle was involved in Hoskins’ death.

Dennis addressed this in his statement, arguing that “weapon” is common Australian slang for something impressive and that the media used the post to “misrepresent his intentions.”

Allegations of Media Harassment

Dennis also used the post to criticize journalists’ conduct during the mourning period, alleging that some reporters made insensitive comments in front of his young children.

He stated he has “always been against any sort of abuse against women” and felt forced to open up publicly to protect his reputation and his family’s future.
